Borrowing from the future

With a pinch of luck and a little planning, retirement is something most people look forward to after a long journey. There are many different ways to plan for that retirement, and saving money in a 401k type plan is certain one of the more popular ones. When that money becomes a tempting piece of fruit on the tree before retirement, is it worth picking?

Making the choice to withdraw funds from a retirement account has its benefits and disadvantages. Taking a low-interest loan from the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) to pay off significantly higher interest rates on debt can potentially lead to great cost savings. Then again, the benefits may not be what one expects at the end of the day.

Any earnings that money withdrawn from the TSP could have earned had it remained in the account might be greater than the savings realized from interest on other loans. If a 2 percent loan from the TSP replaces a 20 percent loan on a credit card, but the stock market yields a 25 percent return that year, then the net effect is less money in the TSP at retirement. If the stock market performs poorly and loses 10 percent, then the move was beneficial.

Nobody knows exactly which direction the market will travel in a given year, much less by what degree. When making the decision to take a TSP loan, the best resource you can draw upon is your own judgment.

If a difficult financial situation is making it hard to sleep at night, and a TSP loan can alleviate that issue, it might be worth consideration. If the money from a TSP loan is used to buy a new boat, RV, TV, or other toys, it might not be the best use of retirement assets.

What do you think about TSP loans?

I ordered a parcel from the uk and it still hasn't arrived after double the specified delivery time?

To contact us Click HERE
I ordered it 2 weeks ago today and it was specified as taking 4-6 days. ( i live in aus) i also used this http://www1.auspost.com.au/gc/ and it said it shouldve arrived last friday. I spent $130 on this so its really important i find out a quick solution and the seller is unable to give a refund for 28 days. What is best to do in this situation?I ordered a parcel from the uk and it still hasn't arrived after double the specified delivery time?
Mailing times are always longer at Christmas, that's why we're always being told to post early! There will be a huge volume of mail coming from the UK and it all needs to be checked by Australian Quarantine before going into the mail system so expect some delays there. Plus Australia Post were on strike yesterday which doesn't help.

Expecting the package to get here in 4-6 days at this time of year was overly optimistic. A more realistic timeframe would be 2 to 3 weeks. If you haven't received it after 3 weeks contact the sender. I ordered something from Canada three weeks ago, and I honestly don't expect to see it until the New Year.

The link you gave is simply Australia Post's 'expected date calculator', not a guarantee that an item will arrive on a specified date.
Dunno, but I live in the UK and I can tell you that the postal system here is in crisis with loads of delayed mail piled up in sorting offices.I ordered a parcel from the uk and it still hasn't arrived after double the specified delivery time?
I think you'll find that Australia Post is on strike, nothing you can do about it I don't think. I hope it arrives for you before christmas.
Well the seller won't be able to do anything about it if the post lost it.

You should contact them and tell them if it still doesn't arrive by next week.I ordered a parcel from the uk and it still hasn't arrived after double the specified delivery time?
They cheated you. Call the company and threaten that you will sue them for false delivery and item.
Coo-ee! Maybe the postman left it at the billabong, and the bloody dingos got it!!
You either got ripped off, or there is a major lag: Holiday, shipping problem, wrong address, and kept..

Does California Need An Oil Severance Tax?

To contact us Click HERE
I used to think it didn't sound like that bad an idea. After all, every other state has one, don't they? Well, no, not all do. Some, as it is with California, have other forms of taxes that pretty much replace oil severance taxes.

This California Political Review article gives some details on California oil and gas taxation in comparison with other states. I realize many readers probably support increased taxes on oil and gas companies, regardless of how much they already pay. This being California, many don't want more oil or gas extraction in the state, either.

Just thought I'd throw this out there.

Another Problematic and Inadequate Moving Alternative: Atlas' Smart Move Program

To contact us Click HERE
As someone whose firm has helped over 100,000 customers with shipments less than 2000
lbs, moving from one state to another (interstate moving), I was shocked and surprised to see that one of the nation's leading Van Lines, Atlas, chose to embark on a unique Small Shipment
Program, aptly named, Smart Move.

I can't find anything smart about it.

As the first firm in the nation to actually interact with the Less than Truckload Freight Industry,
Box Brothers simply created a system that allows for small shipments to be transported across state lines, by utilizing the existing infrastructure of the United States Freight system.

At the time, everyone in the moving industry, simply felt that they had nothing in common with the freight industry, as plain and simple, the movers were specialists and the freight guys were just haulers. As is often the case, there has always been more synergy between these two industries than anyone in either industry has admitted.

After all, about 25 years ago, it was a railroad, Norfork Southern, who owned North American Van Lines, and who decided it was foolish to have drop frame trailers, as someone there theorized that if they had equipment and orders but not the right equipment to haul freight, even if they were going in the same direction, they could not capitalize on it, due to the fact that
drop frame trailers were not suitable for palletized freight shipments.

Conceptually, this was not a bad idea, but it never worked and North American Van Lines, never seemed to get up to speed hauling a lot of freight. It could be that the Moving and Storage Industry is sometimes, decentralized with agent drivers and agents, who did not want the freight and of course, there were those who argued that it would be penny wise and pound foolish
to have a van line driver miss a job to load 5000 lbs when the freight firm needed 400 lbs picked up and delivered in a few days--something that the household driver and industry was simply not prepared to work out--then.

So here comes Atlas with this idea to create these heavy duty plastic type containers, similar to what we call a lift van, but much sturdier, and I suspect, as a very high cost. Never mind the carbon footprint so often discussed today.

But then, Atlas did something new in its program, it announced that it would not use the Atlas
over the road fleet to help facilitate the movement of these units, instead, deciding to put the
whole program onto a freight platform, to most likely obtain the benefit of quicker delivery dates than the moving industry can deliver, due to its structure of utilizing owner operators for interstate service.

Of course, the problem here is the same problem with all of the other small shipment solutions
the van lines have come up with in the past, merely addressing the need to offer a small shipment alternative, but with nothing compelling to the customer or nothing that moves the service and price quotient any closer to giving the customer a good and valuable transparent service, which is just what the industry is lacking today.

How does one size fit all a good solution. If you have 200 pounds to move, it will cost over $10.00 a pound just to ship it through their system. How come they can't tell the customer that the coverage they claim to provide to the customer that is included with each shipment,
is bogus. I think you would need to have a spaceship land on your container for you to be able to make a claim, as the whole issue here as with all of these new alternatives, is that the customer, becomes self insured and two, he moves himself, but pays as much as he would for a
full service move and does not have insurance to cover any losses.

This is the crap we get from one of the nations largest van lines. No transparency, no value in pricing and they do not tell anyone that their coverage will not cover the customer for self loading or packed by owner boxes. If this is a do it yourself service, how come they can't just tell you the truth? Why do they need to lie. Do you go to the market and buy fruits and vegetables, do you have to pay for 5 lbs of carrots, if you only want to buy one lb?

How does this help the moving industry, to promote a non transparent and one size fits all service, when the entire industry is about being able to deliver good service for a fair price. In
this day and age of renewed called for more regulation, not less, do we get a service that only promises an 11 day transit, over the freight system.

Maybe someone should tell Atlas and their "Smart Moving" program that Fedex, for example,
will take LTL freight from my dock on Monday, 4/16/12, and have it delivered to someone's
new home by this Friday, in New York, on 4/20/12, with standard freight delivery.

I might be wrong, but when we created our Small Shipment Services Program at Box Brothers, over 20 years ago, we set out to create an environment that leveled the playing field for the
smaller loads and their customers: We gave them certain dates and specific times for our crews
to do the pick ups; we took professional inventories; we packaged their possessions like they were our own, utilizing more and better packaging (air cushioning, void fill, eps foam sheeting, ethafoam for very heavy and breakable items like stone, glass, and statues, piano's, etc, and we boxed everything in customized cartons that were made to fit the item, not the other way around, and finally, palletized the shipment so that the only way that the shipment was moved, was with a forklift or a pallet jack--so that no item would be moved individually.

We also worked to obtain a mutually beneficial insurance program with a third party insured,
who specifically covers all items which need to be declared and valued prior to the move. We offer different deductibles, replacement cost protection and in the event of a claim, 99% of them are closed within 30 days after a formal claim form is submitted by the claimant.

But the biggest factor in our continued success is that we have a top to bottom commitment to the customer and to rendering top quality service, no matter how small the job is. You turn your lemons into lemonade and and you do not mislead your customer, nor do you convince him or her that a one size solution is best for all.

Atlas is a fine van line, one of the best, but I think this program, including suggesting the use of stock boxes, not official moving boxes is also a mistake by Atlas here, as on the one hand, they tell people that dish packs should be used for packing dishes and glasses--the standard for many decades in the moving industry--and they encourage the use of a single wall carton if you do it
yourself. Why?

I just wish that sometimes, large firms do their due diligence correctly, as we seem to forget what we have learned over the years, that we need to be service oriented and we need to provide good solutions for our customers, not something that is only a partial and not a complete
solution for their current and future small shipment customers. At the same time, these efforts only ensure that firms like Box Brothers will continue to play a part in this segment of the industry.

It is very important not to wait till the last minute to ship Mom her gifts, as if you do it early, it
will be less expensive to ship, since we have time this week to ship the presents ground, and not
air, which is a lot more money.

My mother, unfortunately, is no longer alive, but I remember what she often told me in her later years, which, for some reason, still rings true: a mother can take care of 10 kids, but 10 kids cannot take care
of one mother......I think my Mom told me this when I first forgot to get her a mother's day gift.....but
after hearing that statement, I was never late again.

Ask me, one day is not enough to celebrate mothers, as without them, where would be all be......

Difficulties in Spending Federal Tax Dollars

Federal Tax Dollars

A Continuing Resolution isn’t the typical subject of water cooler conversations. Since many stories in the news recently have focused on the subject, this is a good opportunity to figure out what it really is and where it comes from.

The President of the United States is responsible for creating a federal budget each fiscal year. After careful planning, he submits his budget request to Congress for approval. From there, it’s divided into 12 sections, known as appropriations bills. Each bill goes to a separate subcommittee in both the House and the Senate with jurisdiction over the content in a particular bill. A vote by Congress is then held on each section.

If all goes well, the final package is approved by both houses of Congress and is sent back to the President for his signature. When a disagreement over one or more provisions occurs, Congress can choose to pass a Continuing Resolution (CR). A CR extends the previous year’s budget into the next year to avoid any gaps in federal services.

A CR is meant to be a temporary measure to continue federal funding until an agreement can be made on the content of the budget. When Congress cannot agree on a budget, and they fail to create a CR to authorize federal spending, all but the most essential services in the impacted federal agencies and programs must shut down when the existing budget expires.

For the recent Continuing Resolution from September 24, 2012, click here.

What do you think about the process of operating on a Continuing Resolution when an agreement on a budget can’t be reached?

The Phony Sequester Hysteria

To contact us Click HERE
I thought we might have gone beyond the phony budget cut claims that are so much the norm in this country. Maybe just because during the last few years in California they actually did reduce spending in some areas.

That doesn't seem to be the case with the hysteria over the federal budget and the supposed "sequester". As Bob Woodward explains, they're not going to cut anything. They're just won't be increasing spending as much as some would like:

"In other words this isn’t even really a cut – “devastating” or otherwise – it’s a modest growth rate reduction following years of unnecessary, embarrassing and unsustainable excesses.".

Yet all of the mainstream media I've read or watched keeps saying there will actually be cuts.
~~~~~~~~~~On a related note, Reason's Nick Gillespie looks at what causes government spending to go up. His main conclusion: United government and war. This is why I insist gridlock is good!
The new kiosks feature a brighter and largertouch screen and also have a scanner for pricing greeting cards and ReadyPost products, along with a scale. The Postal Service’s expanded use of “lobby assistants” is intended tointroduce customers to the new kiosks and show them how they work. The lobbyassistants also will greet and prepare customers waiting in line to make theirtransactions with retail associates quicker and easier.
Another Problematic and Inadequate Moving Alternative: Atlas' Smart Move Program
To contact us Click HERE
As someone whose firm has helped over 100,000 customers with shipments less than 2000
lbs, moving from one state to another (interstate moving), I was shocked and surprised to see that one of the nation's leading Van Lines, Atlas, chose to embark on a unique Small Shipment
Program, aptly named, Smart Move.
I can't find anything smart about it.
As the first firm in the nation to actually interact with the Less than Truckload Freight Industry,
Box Brothers simply created a system that allows for small shipments to be transported across state lines, by utilizing the existing infrastructure of the United States Freight system.
At the time, everyone in the moving industry, simply felt that they had nothing in common with the freight industry, as plain and simple, the movers were specialists and the freight guys were just haulers. As is often the case, there has always been more synergy between these two industries than anyone in either industry has admitted.
After all, about 25 years ago, it was a railroad, Norfork Southern, who owned North American Van Lines, and who decided it was foolish to have drop frame trailers, as someone there theorized that if they had equipment and orders but not the right equipment to haul freight, even if they were going in the same direction, they could not capitalize on it, due to the fact that
drop frame trailers were not suitable for palletized freight shipments.
Conceptually, this was not a bad idea, but it never worked and North American Van Lines, never seemed to get up to speed hauling a lot of freight. It could be that the Moving and Storage Industry is sometimes, decentralized with agent drivers and agents, who did not want the freight and of course, there were those who argued that it would be penny wise and pound foolish
to have a van line driver miss a job to load 5000 lbs when the freight firm needed 400 lbs picked up and delivered in a few days--something that the household driver and industry was simply not prepared to work out--then.
So here comes Atlas with this idea to create these heavy duty plastic type containers, similar to what we call a lift van, but much sturdier, and I suspect, as a very high cost. Never mind the carbon footprint so often discussed today.
But then, Atlas did something new in its program, it announced that it would not use the Atlas
over the road fleet to help facilitate the movement of these units, instead, deciding to put the
whole program onto a freight platform, to most likely obtain the benefit of quicker delivery dates than the moving industry can deliver, due to its structure of utilizing owner operators for interstate service.
Of course, the problem here is the same problem with all of the other small shipment solutions
the van lines have come up with in the past, merely addressing the need to offer a small shipment alternative, but with nothing compelling to the customer or nothing that moves the service and price quotient any closer to giving the customer a good and valuable transparent service, which is just what the industry is lacking today.
How does one size fit all a good solution. If you have 200 pounds to move, it will cost over $10.00 a pound just to ship it through their system. How come they can't tell the customer that the coverage they claim to provide to the customer that is included with each shipment,
is bogus. I think you would need to have a spaceship land on your container for you to be able to make a claim, as the whole issue here as with all of these new alternatives, is that the customer, becomes self insured and two, he moves himself, but pays as much as he would for a
full service move and does not have insurance to cover any losses.
This is the crap we get from one of the nations largest van lines. No transparency, no value in pricing and they do not tell anyone that their coverage will not cover the customer for self loading or packed by owner boxes. If this is a do it yourself service, how come they can't just tell you the truth? Why do they need to lie. Do you go to the market and buy fruits and vegetables, do you have to pay for 5 lbs of carrots, if you only want to buy one lb?
How does this help the moving industry, to promote a non transparent and one size fits all service, when the entire industry is about being able to deliver good service for a fair price. In
this day and age of renewed called for more regulation, not less, do we get a service that only promises an 11 day transit, over the freight system.
Maybe someone should tell Atlas and their "Smart Moving" program that Fedex, for example,
will take LTL freight from my dock on Monday, 4/16/12, and have it delivered to someone's
new home by this Friday, in New York, on 4/20/12, with standard freight delivery.
I might be wrong, but when we created our Small Shipment Services Program at Box Brothers, over 20 years ago, we set out to create an environment that leveled the playing field for the
smaller loads and their customers: We gave them certain dates and specific times for our crews
to do the pick ups; we took professional inventories; we packaged their possessions like they were our own, utilizing more and better packaging (air cushioning, void fill, eps foam sheeting, ethafoam for very heavy and breakable items like stone, glass, and statues, piano's, etc, and we boxed everything in customized cartons that were made to fit the item, not the other way around, and finally, palletized the shipment so that the only way that the shipment was moved, was with a forklift or a pallet jack--so that no item would be moved individually.
We also worked to obtain a mutually beneficial insurance program with a third party insured,
who specifically covers all items which need to be declared and valued prior to the move. We offer different deductibles, replacement cost protection and in the event of a claim, 99% of them are closed within 30 days after a formal claim form is submitted by the claimant.
But the biggest factor in our continued success is that we have a top to bottom commitment to the customer and to rendering top quality service, no matter how small the job is. You turn your lemons into lemonade and and you do not mislead your customer, nor do you convince him or her that a one size solution is best for all.
Atlas is a fine van line, one of the best, but I think this program, including suggesting the use of stock boxes, not official moving boxes is also a mistake by Atlas here, as on the one hand, they tell people that dish packs should be used for packing dishes and glasses--the standard for many decades in the moving industry--and they encourage the use of a single wall carton if you do it
yourself. Why?
I just wish that sometimes, large firms do their due diligence correctly, as we seem to forget what we have learned over the years, that we need to be service oriented and we need to provide good solutions for our customers, not something that is only a partial and not a complete
solution for their current and future small shipment customers. At the same time, these efforts only ensure that firms like Box Brothers will continue to play a part in this segment of the industry.
Mother's Day is Coming........
Just a friendly reminder to all of you that Mother's Day is only 14 days from today, May 13th.
It is very important not to wait till the last minute to ship Mom her gifts, as if you do it early, it
will be less expensive to ship, since we have time this week to ship the presents ground, and not
air, which is a lot more money.
My mother, unfortunately, is no longer alive, but I remember what she often told me in her later years, which, for some reason, still rings true: a mother can take care of 10 kids, but 10 kids cannot take care
of one mother......I think my Mom told me this when I first forgot to get her a mother's day gift.....but
after hearing that statement, I was never late again.
Ask me, one day is not enough to celebrate mothers, as without them, where would be all be......
Happy Mothers Day.
Radley Balko, having recently moved his blog to the Huffington Post, has started a series on botched SWAT team raids. Today's is here. Scroll down his blog and you'll find more. He's trying to do one a day and has said that while he's focusing on botched raids, he'll also present some raids that were done right.
The series is an offshoot of his soon to be available book Rise Of The Warrior Cop in which he looks at the militarization of our police forces.
Molest Mistrial Defendant's Mother Seeks Comments
The mother of the defendant in the child molest case reported in the Times- Standard today replied to the comment I made on their web site. She'd like to hear more opinions on the three options available after the mistrial was declared: retrial, further plea bargaining or dismissal.
I've already commented that since the jury was deadlocked at 11 to 1 for acquittal, they should just drop it and dismiss the case. I could see retrying it if it was the other way around, 11 to 1 for conviction, but seems to me they've got a long way to go to get there.
Besides, I always wonder about these retrials. How far do you go with them? Keep retrying until you get a conviction? That doesn't seem right.
I believe you need a Facebook account to comment on the Times- Standard web site. Feel free to comment here if you don't have one or can't get into their site. They only give something like six free views before you have to pay.
Supremes Back Drug Dog Search
To contact us Click HERE
I mentioned last year, the Supreme Court was going to hear two cases regarding the validity of drug dog searches. They decided one of them yesterday ruling that, despite a dog alerting falsely on the same vehicle twice, the dog's alerts were still grounds for probable cause for a search.
The way I read it, the justices are saying it doesn't matter what the false alert rate of drug dogs are. That they were certified through an official drug dog training course, alone, validates their alerts as sufficient.
This is almost the exact opposite of the sort of ruling I thought would be proper. What this means is that anybody, drug user or not, can be searched on a whim if a drug dog decides for one reason to another to alert on your car or home.
The death of a thousand cuts continues, and I'm sure we'll see this case used as precedent by courts in the future to further eviscerate protections against illegal search and seizures.
~~~~~~~I've written about drug dogs before. Radley Balko had a great post on his blog last year that should have been titled All You Ever Needed To Know About Drug Dogs.

Update: Radley Balko opines this recent decision.

The Freddy's Letter

Anybody guess which paper and subject my most recent letter to the editor was about? Published today in the Times- Standard:

I appreciate Brad Meiners' suggestion of replacing invocation at city council meetings with a moment of silence (”Alternatives exist to civic invocations,” Times-Standard, Feb. 17, Page A4). Invocations are annoying and unnecessary, but why bother replacing them with anything?

Government meetings should consist of government business and that's it. There's no need for a moment of silence or anything else. Take care of government business, then people can go home and pray or be silent to their heart's content.

Addendum:I should make it clear that invocation at city council meetings and the Mayor's prayer breakfasts are two different issues. I believe the Mayor should be able to hold prayer breakfasts whenever he chooses, so long as it's not on government time or the taxpayer's dime.

I ordered a parcel from the uk and it still hasn't arrived after double the specified delivery time?

Who Is Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf ?

To contact us Click HERE

For as long as I can remember, the biggest and most treacherous animal out there,in the “retail” marketplace has always been Walmart.  I think books—many of them havebeen written about the “big bad wolf,” that many have labeled Walmart to be, claiming thatthey have been so successful in attracting customers, they have decimated so many small andindependent businesses, that they are a “jobs killer,”, as their detractors have claimed.
As someone who has retail locations, Box Brothers has been in business for a long time, but whileeveryone is entitled to their opinions, I for one, do not share this opinion, that Walmart is the “big badwolf out there, as if they are all of that, as some claim, how come no one complains about the marketingtactics of Target, or even the goings on with some other large national chains, like Home Depot, for example.
My premise is that while businesses, retail and otherwise, have gotten not only larger, more complex, butalso more dominant in this society, than at any other time since the inception of the series of rules normallyreferred to the Antitrust laws of the United States.   My point is that, for whatever reason, these laws are notworking as they should to protect the American consumer and the American small businessman.   Further,it is also my contention that Walmart has other detractors, unions for example, as the national supermarketssimply have higher costs of labor than does Walmart, or even Target.  But why Target is never the target of thesegroups, is beyond me and the point of this blog.
For example, this past week, I got some emails from Home Depot, and guess what business Home Depot now wants to bein, this week?   Flowers—yes, I was solicited from Home Depot to buy roses for Valentines Day on February14, 2013.   From a warehouse that sells lumber, nails, and everything else under the sun, except groceries.
Leverage is not just a television show, I guess, it is what large firms do to make sure they hammer on smallercompetitors to make sure they out muscle them, out market them and convince potential customers that theyare all that.  In that vein, I also saw a story about Home Depot being the place that is going to hire so many newemployees this year, that they alone will pull this region out of its unemployment doldrums….They used an employeefrom the local Home Depot, and they put on a 30 second clinic in how they were such a great place to work, etc, etc, etc.
So, why does not our media ask Home Depot what the starting salary is for these positions, how many people they letgo last year, and how many of those who they are hired are in upper management, today.   And even more telling, howmany of those employees can afford to buy a median priced home in Southern California, or even Las Vegas, for thatmatter?  The answer is no one working at Home Depot can even afford to rent a median priced apartment in many partsof Los Angeles, or Las Vegas.   The same holds true with Target, 95% of all of their employees on the floors of their stores,make less than $12.00 per hour, with little to no benefits.
If I may, my personal experience is one I would like to offer, to show how sometimes truth can be trampled.   I went to Home Depotto get some Poinsettias at the start of the holiday season.  I went to Home Depot per their heavy advertisementsoffering them, at a good price.   So I went there an hour after the start of the sale, they were sold out.   I asked thissame woman who did the tv spot for them, and she told me that they only got a few and were sold out before thesale even started…….this from one of the world’s largest retailers and the lady laughed at me, saying what did Iexpect.   I told her, that I expected the largest hardward store in the world to make good on their offer as I sawit as a way to simply get me to their store to buy something else… she walked away and that is the extent of thehelp and customer service I have had at Home Depot, as their service stinks.   Why is bait and switch not relevant forHome Depot, as their TV personality said it to me and called me a fool to think otherwise.   I guess it’s fair for them todo as they please.
If you follow this line of reasoning, they are justified to go after the flower guys, as why not, the supermarkets hammeredthe small independent flower guys years ago (did anyone notice, or care?), but the supermarkets did not get blamed forhurting the small mom and pop flower stores that were hit with competition from well healed money interests, such asSafeway and Kroger, a couple of behemoths in their own right.  But Safeway and Ralphs (and Walmart) do not presentlyhave any presence in the flower delivery business.
What is common among all large businesses, is that they have forgotten their humble beginnings, and moved ontowhat they consider, as, greener pastures: another way of saying they can hammer competitors that are small independentlyowned businesses easier and faster, than they can larger for well healed ones.   So they all hammer on the small guy, whohas no leverage and today, it is my feeling that the American consumer has simply confused price and service and forgot aboutservice.  How else can you understand just how large these firms have become so dominant and omnipotent?
What I do not get, is that I have yet to find any of these large firms, that dominate American Business, that are open,accessible, fair and reasonable—but most importantly, they all would rather hire a focus group to hear what they thinktheir customers want, instead of simply being brave enough to simply meet their customers and ask them to their face.
Why?
Cause these decision makers, are so far removed from their actual places of business, and their customers, they would not evenknow what to ask or how to answer a question from a customer.   If you own a business, why would you not want to meet and greetyour customers, or speak to them about what is right or wrong with your firm?  Instead, you hire surrogates to come up with what youcan find out on your own, again, I ask why?
Today they make a TV show called Undercover Boss, and no one says how dumb it is that these owners/CEO’s have tohide their own identity in their own firms, to learn what is going on….so we have now, an entertainment focus group….how appropriate and no one has the balls to come out and say, is this the best that you can do?
Perhaps the more important question is why do we, as a people, spend our money with those firms who do not care aboutthem as customers, or who, are even willing to speak to their customers?  Ever try to speak to someone at American Expresswho was not a $10.00 per hour employee at a phone bank in El Paso, Texas?  Ever get a letter from American Express from acorporate officer who had no return address, phone number or a way to engage him with a question?
How about at Home Depot?   Once I was enticed, as a customer of ADP, the world’s largest provider of processed payroll services,and they said if anyone ever had an issue with any part of their service, I could call up their corporate offices and speak to one oftheir officers.   It worked, I signed up and when I had a problem with one of their phone room people who messed up some of myemployees checks by being negligent and careless, I got put on hold, and they never called me back, they had no idea who was to speakto me or anything.  It was a pure lie.   And they benefitted by their lies, and then like other large dominate firms, they just spend moremoney on branding, trying to get all of us to believe how great and benevolent they are.
As I said earlier, the antitrust rules are not working today, as intended, as large companies are the only firms who can go do workin China, or Mexico, or some other place with low cost labor, not small businesses, and we have seen a general lack of competitionin trucking, package shipping (only 2 national firms do all of the private transport in the United States), hardware, appliance sales,and this discussion leaves out the large dominant online firms—that’s for another day.
What is troubling is that when these large firms get comfortable maintaining their market share, they refrain from competing as theyshould, and that will lead to some stagnation in our economy, I believe, as they become allegiant to maintaining the status quo, andnot taking any competitive risks.   Since only large firms can have access to money or capital today, this is a hidden plaque on all of usin America today.  The only new entrepreneurs we will have will be those whose family had the money to get them going, as the largebusinesses out there just want to divide a market and maintain it, just like the oil companies, do, and so long as our government allowsthis kind of thing to keep going on, the divide between middle class and the wealthy will only get bigger, as this last recession has clearlyshown.
By looking at this picture fairly, and I have no hope this will be done any time soon, that
